To the farmer utilisation of organic matter (compost)

The model utilised a pellet compost product that was poured with a 5 Kg/mq dose mixed to the soil through a 15 cm harrowing. This demonstrated to be effective in enriching the soil with organic matter.

Compost is classified by the Italian law as “Green composted soil amendment” if obtained exclusively by vegetal by-products and as “Mixed composted soil amendment” if obtained by the composting of vegetal by-products mixed to biomasses of different origin (organic fraction of urban waste, market waste; agro-industry waste; husbandry waste, etc…).
Compost, if in accordance with this law restrictions, represents a fine fertilizer for agriculture and its utilisation is recommended in the good farming practice. Compost is generally recognised for its positive results in the improvement of soil quality and in the conservation of the soil fertility in medium-long term. These results were recently demonstrated also by an European Project that confronted different composting theses in support of a sustainable fertilization assumption (FertiLife Project), issuing many reports (in Italian) on the results obtained.

To be effective the mulching has to cover at least 95% of the field, and this signify to input frequently more than 200 t/ha-1. Its use therefore depends on the availability and on the price.

Moreover quality of compost it is important and therefore will be utilised only quality compost according to the standards fixed by the Italian laws D.L. 22/97 and 748/84.
